Still Life Series...
In the Spring of 1999, I visited the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. At the time, the MOMA was featuring an exhibition of works by the late Roy Lichtenstein. I was struck by the stark simplicity of his works, and spent a great deal of time examining how they change as I moved about the room. Somewhat subconsciously, I began trying to emulate his style, but soon found myself drawing the same still life, with occasional slight variations, over and over again: A wine bottle and glass on a table. As you can see, sometimes it wasn't a bottle and a glass, but the still life theme would not go away. My other projects were put on hold as I obsessively pumped close to a hundred still life sketches in various media. I'm still not sure if I was trying achieve uniformity through repetition, or simply living by the pen instead of the sword...
